Via Romea Germanica Donauwörth - Schongau:
If walking 120 km on tarmac roads is your preferred activity, you'd better stay on the official and signposted long distance hiking path "Via Romea", which takes every little village and the small roads inbetween. - But if you prefer to walk immersed into nature, on fine gravel roads and on hiking paths, there are better alternatives along rivers. If you feel fine following signposted paths, then watch out for "Weitwanderweg Romantische Straße" and the "Lech-Erlebnis-Weg". Do not follow the "Via Claudia Augusta"-signposts, as these mark a very popular long distance cycling route, mostly on tarmac. If you are not scared about following an unknown GPS-Track and sometimes no signposts at all, then check out my track here. It takes small paths along the river Schmutter and later on along the big river Lech. Of course, this variant heads into medieval town Augsburg, where you should visit the historic heritage of this very important town. After leaving Augsburg you will follow again small paths and forest roads through big forests and along river Lech. My proposal has one disadvantage: Be aware, you will not find many infrastructure. For buying food, beverages and for sleeping you will have to enter villages and towns. - If you check the track you will note two paths: one is the "official" one and the other is my track. You will easily understand, which one is better for you! - Have a nice walk!
